Omkar Panchami is a Hindu festival celebrated on the fifth day of the month of Magha. It is a day dedicated to the worship of the sacred word “Om”. The word "Om" is considered to be the essence of all creation, and is said to have the power to bring peace, harmony and wisdom.
This festival is celebrated in many different ways. Some people visit temples and pilgrimage sites to offer prayers and chant mantras. Others organize special ceremonies at home, such as recitation of the Gayatri Mantra or singing bhajans. Still others take time to contemplate the meaning of the word "Om" and its significance in their lives.
In West Bengal, Omkar Panchami is also celebrated as the birth anniversary of spiritual leader Sri Sri Sitaramdas Omkarnath, who was born on this day in 1892. Sitaramdas was a proponent of the Omkarnath Hare Krishna mantra, and is considered so by many. An incarnation of Lord Krishna. On Omkar Panchami, his followers gather at his ashrams and temples to celebrate his birthday and chant the Hare Krishna mantra.
Omkar Panchami is a time for spiritual contemplation and renewal. It is a day to concentrate on the sanctity of the word “Om” and seek its blessings.
